General Information

Alpha Eta Rho, a professional aviation fraternity, was founded at the University of Southern California on April 10, 1929.  It was organized for four purposes:

-To further the cause of aviation in all its' branches,
-To install in the mind of the public a confidence in aviation,
-To promote a closer affiliation among the students of aviation for the purpose of
education and research,
-To promote contacts between students of aviation and those already engaged in the profession.

Alpha Eta Rho, a first in the first in the history of aviation, serves a dual mission:

1. To enlighten the serious aerospace student on facts concerning all fields directly related to aerospace.

2. To unite people with an interest in aviation and to share opinions and views on aviation subject matter.

Our badge is fashioned after the radial air-cooled engine.  Its' five cylinders represent the five fundamental tenants of the fraternity, which are:

First:  It shall be the bounden duty of every member to aid and encourage his fellow  pilots in every manner possible.
Second:  Every pilot of Alpha Eta Rho shall bend his earnest efforts to the advancement of the profession.
Third:  Each member shall strive at all times to create goodwill toward aeronautics through the implantation in the public mind of a confidence to be built up by the presentation of facts in their proper light.
Fourth:  The upholding and advancement of the ethics of aviation shall be a basic aim of each individual member.
Fifth:  Each pilot shall at all times so conduct himself or herself as to reflect honor upon his profession, his fraternity, and himself.

The fraternity serves as a contact between the aviation industry and educational institutions.  It bands into one organization, outstanding students, interested faculty, and industrial leaders for the purpose of studying the problems of everyday life as influenced by this modern industry-aviation.

Alpha Eta Rho serves to actively associate interested students of aviation with leaders and executives in the industry.  This close association, strengthened through the bonds of an international aviation fraternity, establishes opportunities for all members in their relation to aviation and inspires interest and cooperation among those in the profession who are also members of Alpha Eta Rho.

The constitution of Alpha Eta Rho declares that the success of aeronautics depends upon its unfilled development in all the countries of the world and upon the cooperation of different phases of aviation with each other.  It affirms its character to be international and declares eligibility for membership not dependent upon race, religion, nationality, or sex.

Alpha Eta Rho continues to grow and serves as a lasting tribute to farsighted understanding and vision of it's founder, Professor Earl W. Hill.
